The dream purchase for a large family in Salcombe. Merchants house stands four stories high and is situated in the heart of this seaside towns conservation area. Being commissioned as 3 separate apartments during the war, the brief was to bring the house back to its original glory as one large family home. At an early outset the owners passion for minimal design and no fuss interiors framed the ethos of this brief and with a sensitive nod to the crumbling architectural mouldings, this home needed to deliver old charm with modern style and function. Light and art were central to the design and the colour scheme considerate to the extensive and newly commissioned art collection. Finally, as a dog loving family of 7 the home needed to deliver in terms of fashion and function and careful consideration was taken when selecting layout and materials for durability and ease of maintenance.
Working closely with skilled local craftsmen to replicate existing architectural plaster mouldings, metal railings and joinery whilst sourcing more contemporary bespoke kitchens and staircases from British designers, this house is a fusion of tradition and modernity and sensitively remembers the past with open fires, natural materials and detailed and elaborate architectural mouldings. Subtle honed marble tiles line the main floor with durable upholstery, drift wood sculptures and of course, smart technology for total house control whether home or away.
Finally, the garden was married to the home to create one seamless pad for effortless entertaining and whole family entertainment. New doors were added in the kitchen along with a bridge to the newly designed mediterranean patio, 3 new sun terraces to suit the needs of different members of the family and a badminton lawn and treehouse canopy to keep the kids entertained. The result is a fusion of tradition and modernity in a tech savvy home, offering free flowing rooms, light and airy spaces to relax and entertain in and minimal walls to showcase an extensive art collection.
